Ingredients

  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/3 cup shortening or butter
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients
  2. Cut the shortening in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs
  3. Stir in the buttermilk until just moistened
  4. Turn onto a lightly floured surface
  5. Roll into 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter
  6. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet
  7. Bake at 450F for 8-10 minutes (or until golden brown)

Notes

  • Buttermilk substitution
    • You can also substitute regular milk for buttermilk if you don't have any
    • For each cup of buttermilk, you can use 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice plus enough milk to measure 1 cup.
